“I was in Udaipur in January 2014 where I met Mr. Deva. To be honest at that time I had little knowledge of who he was. He was the former member of the European Parliament. During the course of our casual conversation, he offered me an internship at the European Parliament. I was completely gobsmacked.
The European Parliament is serious business and as an employee I was required to be well versed with history, politics, economics, geography and current affairs among several other issues.
While working at the European Parliament I became an important operator for the Alliance of the Conservatives and Reformists in Europe (ACRE). I was so proud to be the only Indian at conferences.
I worked on various humanitarian projects as well, such as at the Praksis Organisation in Athens, Greece.
When COVID-19 hit, I was in Mumbai and I decided to not sit back. I knew I had to do something that could improve the situation even in a small way. This led to the birth of the Rising World Foundation.
We immediately began our drives to distribute relief supplies across 5 states in India. In the first wave, we did our best to spread awareness, distribute masks and sanitizers in rural and impoverished urban districts in Madhya Pradesh.
The second wave was far more brutal and terrifying, than anything we had imagined. All the hospitals were full and were in need of oxygen supplies. It was then that I started getting calls from different villages. It was then that we managed distribute 27 Oxygen concentrators in Indore, Gwalior, Jhabua, Bandagar, Jhabua & Rewa districts in MP.
Currently, I’m working towards purchasing tools to make our own sustainable sanitary pads. We have come a long way since our inception, but we are only just getting started.” said Marina Shaikh
