Prashant Miranda – It’s been 16 years since I’ve been painting for a living

‘My art was always encouraged at an early age, and there was a simplicity to my growing up that aided my art, but I didn’t know that it would be my profession until I got into the National Institute of Design in 1994. I came to Canada in 1999, and was lucky enough to get a job right away at an animation studio in Toronto. It’s here that I designed animated show for children for TV. While designing these shows, people started recognizing a particular style that seemed to be uniquely me. So I pursued that.
I started painting for a living in 2004. It’s been 16 years since I’ve been painting for a living. But I’ve been in the field of art for more than 40 years. Initially my challenges were to make a sustainable income from just painting. I would do art and illustrations for clients and not get paid. But eventually things got easier.
I’ve been keeping a visual journal of my life and travels for over 25 years. I derive inspiration from nature, old architecture and the human body. The closest extension of my art are my sketchbooks. So these have become quite a resource for my art and films.
Presently, I’m spending more time on the west coast of Canada and hope to move there. So right now my dream is to live in a cabin in the woods by the ocean.’ said Prashant Miranda @ Powell River, British Columbia
